* Why get treated ?

If an infected and inflamed appendix is not removed surgically then it can cause life threatening complications like :

1. Rupture of Appendix : A ruptured appendix spreads infection throughout the abdomen causing peritonitis. This is life threatening unless the diseased appendix is removed and the abdominal cavity is cleaned.

2. Appendicular abscess : If the appendix bursts, an abscess may form in an attempt of the body to prevent the spread of infection throughout the abdomen. In this case, the abscess is first drained, antibiotics, given and then the diseased appendix is surgically removed after about 2 -4 weeks.

3. Appendicular lump : In this condition the inflamed appendix adheres to nearby intestine and forms a solid painful lump. Here again antibiotics are given till the infection settles and then the appendix is removed by surgery after about a month.
